History 697C: The Politics of Slavery and the Coming of the Civil War

Synopsis:
This seminar will explore the significance of slavery in the growth of sectional politics in antebellum America. It will cover the rise of proslavery ideology and politics in the southern states as well as the rise of abolition and antislavery in the north. We will also study new approaches on nineteenth century United States political history that look at how the slaves themselves influenced political developments as well as how gender shaped political culture in pre-Civil War America. Recent historical literature will comprise the bulk of readings for the course. Students can choose to write a historiographical or research paper for the course.
