History 691E / 791E:
American Environmental History
Spring 2004, Tues. 9:30 am - 12:00 pm
Synopsis:
An introduction, at the graduate level, to the principal research problems, secondary works, and primary sources for the study of the interaction of humans with the natural environment of North America since European settlement. We will explore both the material dimensions of the topic– physical changes over time in the natural and built environment, and Americans’ changing relationship with natural resources– and its cognitive, dimensions– changes over time in how various groups of Americans perceived the environment. The fundamental premise of the course is that how Americans acted to shape their environment has been a consequence of their perceptions. Students registering for 691E will write several short papers.
Students registering for 791E will develop a prospectus for an original research paper to be completed during the semester or over the summer.
