History 655: Topics in U.S. Cultural History to 1865

Synopsis:

Selected topics in cultural history from the early 17th century to the Civil War.  Discussion will focus on the intensive reading and analysis of primary sources, from almanacs to novels.  The course is structured historically not historiographically (though historiography will play a role).  History 655 is preparatory to a Spring semester research seminar.  There will be two or three short papers plus a prospectus for the Spring semester seminar paper.
