History 605: Approaches to World History

Mary Wilson

Fall 2003, Mon. 2:30 - 5:30 pm

Synopsis:

The aim of this course is to develop ways of conceptualizing world/global history.   We will begin by reading various textbooks and thematic books (for example, Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel).  For this portion of the course students will be required to analyze other authors' approaches to world history in book reviews and classroom presentations.  We will then move on to developing our own ways of conceptualizing world history.  For this portion of the course students will develop and present their own world history syllabi.  Finally we will work on developing geographically specific topics into topics explicitly connected to wider historical developments.   For this portion of the course students will be asked to take a paper they are writing for another course, or have already written, and rewrite it to 1) put it into a world history context and 2) make it say something about that world history context.
