History 602: U.S. Historigraphy to 1865
Fall 2003, Tues. 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Synopsis:
This course explores different forms of historical analysis. It begins with a general discussion of criticism and the craft of history, then deals with ways historians have thought about and attempted to present the past. We will study the established schools of thought (Progressive, Consensus, and New Left, for instance), as well as approaches that do not fit neatly into such historiographical categories. We will wrestle with such issues as the force of race and ethnicity, the issues of narrative, the difference between Marxism and economic determinism, and so on. Each student is responsible for at least two (and possibly three, depending on enrollment) expository essays.
