SCRIPPS COLLEGE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
FACT SHEET FOR BERKSHIRE CONFERENCE JUNE 2005
INFORMATION FOR PRESENTERS:
Q. What do I need to bring if I am showing a presentation on
a computer in a Smart
Classroom?
A. Put your PowerPoint presentation on a CD and be certain that it
is viewable on both current
WindowsXP and Macintosh OSX platforms. Use common True Type fonts
which are universal
to most computers, such as Arial, Helvetica, and Times New Roman.
And try to keep the
presentation simple - see the Scripps PowerPoint guide for helpful
tips, ÒCreating
and Showing a
PowerPoint Presentation on the Scripps Campus.Ó
Most of the Scripps Smart Classrooms have data projectors connected
to Dell computers with
Windows XP; DVD and International VCR players are also installed.
However two of these
rooms, Steele 5 and Boone Recital Hall, have iMacs with OS X.3 operating
system instead.
Equipment instructions are available in all classrooms, and Smart
Classroom training will be
provided on the Thursday before the conference begins. Also, assistants will
be on hand
during the conference if you have any problems operating the equipment.
You will be able to access the Internet on our Smart Classroom computers
for web-based
presentations. If you plan to use a program that is not part of the
Microsoft Office suite, please
contact the Scripps Audio/Visual office prior to the conference at
909-607-3193.
Q. Can I show a presentation on my own laptop?
A. Most laptops can be easily connected to the projectors in the
Smart Classrooms with a VGA
cable available in the room, except for OM100 and Boone Recital Hall*.
However, we strongly
recommend that you also put your presentation on a CD as backup,
in the event your laptop
does not work on the system and you need to use the Scripps computer
instead.
For best results, please set your laptop screen resolution to 1024
x 768 to match the projector
resolution.
*If you need to connect a laptop in OM100 or Boone, please contact
the Scripps Audio/Visual
office the day prior to your presentation at 909-607-3193 to schedule
the connection.
INFORMATION FOR ATTENDEES:
Q. Can I bring my laptop computer to the conference and connect
to the Internet?
A. If you are residing in one of the Scripps dorm rooms, you can
bring a Windows or Macintosh
laptop to the conference and access the Internet in your room. Your
laptop must have a network
interface card (NIC), also called an Ethernet card, and a category
5 or 6 Ethernet cable, which
will allow you to connect to the Internet via the Scripps local network.
Your Ethernet card must
be installed on the computer before you bring it to campus; Scripps
staff will not be able to install
these for you.
In most cases, you will have immediate internet access once the cable
is connected. Settings
from another type of connection may need to be changed before you
have internet access. Our
Residential Network technicians will be able to assist you with dorm
connections: please
contact Donna Rueff at ext. 77428; her office is in Frankel Hall
Room 91.
Note that if you have an operating system older than Windows 2000
or Macintosh OS 9 that you
may have some problems accessing the Internet on our network.
Wireless computer access will not be available to conference
attendees on campus.
Q. What else will I need to bring with my computer?
A. You should bring all of your computer cables and peripherals,
especially your power cord, and
any extra batteries. It is recommended that you label all of your
equipment, and keep your
laptop and peripherals in a case with a name tag. Scripps is not
responsible for any lost or
stolen equipment.
Q. Do I need anti-virus and anti-spyware programs on my computer?
A. YES. To protect the Scripps network, we require that every computer
connecting at Scripps
have active anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, and that they be
kept current. If you will be
connecting to the Internet at Scripps, we request that you update
these programs just prior to
attending the conference, and that you install all current Windows
critical and security updates.
Q. Will there be computers available for me to check my email?
A. There will be computers available for conference attendees to
check Internet email in the
Hospitality Room in the Malott Commons building. In addition, the
college libraries have
computers which provide Internet access.
Attendees will not have access to MSOffice or any other program
except Internet Explorer on
Scripps computers in the Hospitality room.
Q. What other resources will be available?
A. Printing and copying services will be available at The Copy Center
of Honnold Library which is
across the street from Scripps College. And there will be a fax machine
in the Registration
office.
