Get to Know Us

Amherst, situated in the beautiful Pioneer (Connecticut River) Valley, is home to diverse peoples and many of New England's historic sites.

In 2010, US News named Amherst one of the ten best college towns in America, and the town continues to live up to expectations.

History in the Valley is an important part of the fabric of the community, and the UMass Amherst Department of History partners with such sites as Historic Deerfield. For more about Historic Deerfield's historic preservation work, see the video below.

The UMass Graduate Program in Historic Preservation (a History Department partner) teams up with Hancock Shaker Village in the nearby Berkshires as a site for field work and historic study.

See all that our campus and community has to offer! (And keep an eye out in the video for our own Professor Marla Miller and graduate student Thamy Almeida!)
