Study Abroad Scholarships

The scholarships listed below are administered by the HFA Dean's Office and open to students majoring in any HFA department. 

UMass Amherst students taking a language course through the Five College Center for the Study of World Languages may wish to apply for the Charles Mark Scholarship for the Study of Foreign Language. The 2018 application deadline for this scholarship will be on or near January 10, 2018.  Please check with the webpage for an updated and accurate date.

We encourage you to preview the HFA application (.PDF) and prepare your responses in advance so you can paste them into the online application easily. The online application does not allow you to save entered date on a partially completed application or to change an application once it has been submitted. The application deadline is Monday, March 5, 201.

A single study abroad scholarship application permits students to be considered for any of the opportunities listed below for which they are eligible.
Students may apply beginning FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2017.

Study Abroad Scholarship for French and Italian Majors   

The French and Italian Studies Fund for Academic Excellence
Application Deadline - 12:00 noon, Monday, March 5, 2018

The French and Italian Studies Fund for Academic Excellence supports students majoring in French or Italian who will participate in an approved study abroad program in France or Italy for credit during the upcoming summer or during the next academic year. The purpose of the fund is to offer scholarship support based on academic merit to students majoring in French or Italian for language and culture-based study in France or Italy, respectively. This scholarship was established in memory of Kerry Dunn Mackenzie ('88) by her family and friends to recognize and honor the significance of her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris and her passion for the languages and cultures of France and Italy.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be full-time students, have a minimum of twenty-four (24) graded hours in residence at UMass Amherst; have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average; and have their primary or secondary major in French or Italian.

Study Abroad Scholarship for Students of Spanish and Portuguese   

Application Deadline - 12:00 noon, Monday, March 5, 2018

"Horizontes" (horizons in English) is the same in Spanish and Portuguese and it captures the scholarship donor’s intent to provide undergraduate students an opportunity to broaden their view of the world.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be full-time students who have 1) successfully completed upper level courses in Spanish or Portuguese, 2) have an overall GPA greater than 3.0, 3) be applying or admitted to a study abroad program from which UMass Amherst will accept academic credit located in Spain, Portugal or a Latin American country where the primary language spoken is Spanish or Portuguese.

HFA Study Abroad Scholarship

This Study Abroad Scholarship was created to provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to grow through participation in a  language-immersion program of study.

Eligibility requirements:  Applicants must be full-time students with demonstrated financial need, whose major is in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, and whose overall GPA is 3.2 or above. The study abroad programs in which recipients will participate are those from which the University will accept academic credit. Preference will be given to students participating in a language immersion program located in a country where the primary language spoken is not the student’s native tongue.
