A letter from Doug Metcalf '91, '01G
This is the first time I have written an update, but I hope you are
happy and well and enjoying all that Amherst has to offer--and please pass a
fond hello to Eric Roth and the other staff who may remember me. I must
admit that there are times and memories of Amherst I sorely miss and fondly
remember. My life at the moment is quite chaotic, having moved three times
in the past year, recently wed, and now a new job with the Barenboim-Said
Foundation which will require a lot of travelling, playing and teaching. I
tried to boil my update down to a brief "bio-note" length for you, but
should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me
via email (easiest to track me down with!)
Do you remember the work you helped me do with some of the inner-city
kids in Springfield and Chicopee? The Barenboim-Said Foundation is a group,
much like a musical version of "Doctors without borders" that will be
venturing into Palestine and other impovershed cities giving extremely
high-level concerts and music lessons and masterclasses. I feel extremely
priviledged to have ben selected for this honor by Mr. Barenboim.
So, here is the brief bio:
After performing with the Spokane Symphony as second clarinetist and E-Flat
clarinetist for a year (2004-2005), I moved to Berlin, Germany with my wife
Anna Gebert. During the past two years I have performed at the Texas Music
Festival in Houston as well as the Zermatt Music Festival (Switzerland, with
members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra) and toured through the Eastern
United States with the American Wind Symphony. I have most recently
performed as principal clarinetist with the Symphonie Orchester Schoeneberg
in such venues as the Berliner Dom and the Berlin Philharmonic Hall and I
have an upcoming solo-recital (February 1st) in the Music Instrument Museum
in Berlin. I have also accepted an invitation by Daniel Barenboim (Chicago
Symphony) to be artist-faculty of clarinet in his Barenboim-Said Foundation.

Again, thank you for your time and patience, and I hope this email finds you
well during the holiday season.
Sincerely,

PS: I see Mathew Hunter weekly at the Phil and we've been joking about how
the UMass Amherst Musicians ("us") have sparked a friendship at the Phil.
When I get my computer's USB port fixed, I will send you the pic I took of us!
