The Department of Theater at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks a specialist in African American theater and playwriting/play-making. This full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position would begin September 2008. This position is part of a multi-position, multi-department cluster hire in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts designed to build upon the University’s extensive strengths in African American Studies, including the Center for the Study of African American Languages, the W.E.B. Du Bois Papers, and the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies.

The Department seeks a candidate with experience in playwriting and/or playmaking, with a demonstrated interest in African American theater and/or African American cultural production. The successful candidate will have professional experience in playwriting/playmaking, as well as an established history of professionally produced work in New York and regionally; a working knowledge of African American and contemporary repertory; and be capable of crossing boundaries and working closely with different program areas. Actively mentor Department grad students as well as doctoral students in the Department of Afro-American Studies.
