African American Literature and Cultural Studies, Assistant Professor, tenure track, to begin Fall 2008, with a specialization in African American literature and cultural studies after 1950. This position is part of a multi-position, multi-department cluster hire in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts designed to build upon UMass’s extensive strengths in African American studies, including the Center for the Study of African American Languages, the W.E.B. Du Bois papers, and the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies. The English Department seeks a scholar whose work and teaching might complement our current offerings in critical race theory and African American literature with an interest in African American cultural expressivity more generally. We especially welcome candidates with research interests in one or more of the following: popular culture, experimental and avant-garde performance and literature, rhetorics, film, hip hop, or jazz. Qualifications: Ph.D., relevant scholarship, demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, and commitment to participation in an active and energetic department of English, and active involvement in graduate mentoring of doctoral students in the Department of Afro-American Studies.
