Cluster Hire in African-American Studies

With this cluster hire, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at UMass Amherst builds upon its great strengths in African American Studies to support cross-disciplinary collaborations. UMass Amherst hosts the W. E. B. Du Bois papers and boasts the W. E. B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies, one of the oldest programs in the country and a leading doctoral granting program in Afro-American studies. Within UMass Amherst, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts has proven itself a leader in diversifying the faculty, attracting 21%minority faculty, and supporting many new initiatives focused on African-American culture, including the newly formed Center for the Study of African American Language. Distinguished faculty who have taught in the College include Chinua Achebe, Johnnetta Cole, Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, John Edgar Wideman and the late James Baldwin and Max Roach
