The Art History Program of the Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks a specialist in African American Art. Assistant Professor, tenure track, beginning September 2008. This position is part of a multi-position, multi-department cluster hire in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts designed to build upon the University’s extensive strengths in African American Studies, including the Center for the Study of African American Languages, the W.E.B. Du Bois Papers, and the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies. The Department seeks a concerned teacher and voice for African American Art. Qualifications: Ph.D., with demonstrated professional capabilities and ambitions. The position requires active involvement in graduate mentoring of doctoral students in the Department of Afro-American Studies. Course load in Art History is 2 per semester, plus contributions to team-taught surveys. Expertise in a secondary area such as: African Art, African Diaspora Studies, or History of Photography, highly desirable. Commitment to public higher education a plus.
