Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Senior Recognition Ceremony?
The College of Humanities and Fine Arts Senior Recognition Ceremony is an event at which the college honors its graduating class. Unlike University Commencement on Friday when degrees are officially conferred, this event is a college-based celebration of its graduates. Family and friends of graduating students are cordially invited to attend. In addition to remarks by the Dean, each student attending will be announced as he or she walks approaches the stage to be recognized and to receive a commemorative medal. This year, in honor of the University's sesquicentennial, the medals' reverse side will bear an image marking its 150th anniversary.
Where will it be held?
The Humanities and Fine Arts Senior Recognition Ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in the Recreation Center located on campus at 161 Commonwealth Avenue. The Recreation Center is across the street from the Mullins Center and next to the Commonwealth Honors College construction site. The ceremony will take place in a gymnasium-like area. The building is air-conditioned and should be comfortable, but we advise guests to wear layers.
ESPECIALLY FOR PARENTS, FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND GUESTS:
How do we get there and where should we park?
Driving directions to UMass, are available here.
Where should we park?
Click on "park" above to see a map of the campus and its parking lots. Lot 39, next to the Recreation Center, is expressly for handicapped parking. General parking nearest the Recreation Center is in Lots 41 and 64. Lot 25 is relatively convenient as is Lot 67 (note this lot is accessed from Massachusetts Avenue).
When does it begin and when should we arrive?
The Senior Recognition Ceremony will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. Students should arrive at the Center at 12:00 noon with their caps and gowns. Once there, they should go directly to the room designated for students from their major department. Doors to the building will be open when graduates and their guests arrive. Because our ceremony follows that of the College of Engineering, we will want to put things back in order before allowing our guests to enter the venue. If this is not finished when you arrive, please allow us to do so before you enter.
Where shall we sit?
Chairs will be reserved for our graduates and there will be an area designated for those who made arrangements in advance for handicapped seating. PLEASE let us know by Wednesday, May 1, 2013 if seating accommodations are needed. We may not be able to honor requests made the day of the ceremony. All other seats are available on a "first come, first served" basis.
Is assistance available for someone who is hearing impaired?
Sign-language or oral interpreters will be available. Information about how to arrange for this service is posted on the University's Commencement site.
The professional: A professional photographer will be at the ceremony to take a candid picture of each graduate at his or her particular moment of recognition. Details will be posted when they are available.
The family member: We know the importance of a college graduation and appreciate that this is a time that ranks right up there with first steps, first day of school, and other major milestones. You are welcome to take photographs. We only ask that you bear in mind that the room is filled with friends and family in exactly the same position. Please be courteous and respectful as you take your photographs so you do not disrupt the event for others.
The ceremony takes place at lunch time. Will food be available?
Beverages and casual fare "for sale" will be available on site. More detailed information will be posted in April.
