| Guitar Day at UMass í98 welcomes finger style
jazz guitarist Sean McGowan. A native of Bangor, Maine, he
know resides in Portland and is a frequent collaborator with Maine Arts
& Festivals. Described by Brad Nickerson as ìthe manî, Sean is
a one-man orchestra playing a singing melody, a bee-bop bass and interesting
inside voices. He turns the guitar into an entire ensemble as his
funky string slapping turns the guitar into a virtual drum set making heads
bob and toes tap in time. His original tunes often display classical
bridges between chord changes played at lightning speed. His wide
ranging abilities and influences have culminated in not just an impressive
guitar player but a complete musician.
Sean studied guitar at the University of Miami, New England Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music. His instructors included Cecil McBee, George Garzone, Bret Willmott and Tuck Andress. Heís taught numerous clinics including Jazz Camp (Aptos, Cal.) with Tuck Andress, University of Maine/Orono, University of Massachusetts/Amherst and also private clinics for public schools throughout Maine. Sean is joined by Modern Dancer Jolyn Arisman.
