Your basic guitar class. In this class we explore how to play and strum chords to songs in a group. Using folk songs and popular songs and learning a new chord each week, we learn to play in the five main guitar keys. Introduces you to strumming and finger picking techniques. No previous experience needed. Meets on Tuesdays at 7:30 (Section 1a) or Wednesday (Section 1b)
Guitar for Fun II
For more advanced players who know the basic chords and want to do more music theory. We learn finger style songs like Blackbird by Lennon-McCartney and Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix, learn about chord scales and sequences in pop, folk, and jazz styles. Learn techniques that make the guitar simple and fun while learning new songs that expand your reach. Meets on Wednesdays at 8:30 PM, Music Dept 157
Beginning Classical Guitar
For people with nylon-string guitars. Using all the fingers and requiring complete concentration, the guitar is the most sensitive of instruments. With some basic skills, you will be able to express your deepest feelings and experience the intimate sound of the guitar. Introduces you to note reading and musical interpretation so you can play simple finger-style songs by the end of class. Includes appreciation of the music of the great masters of the guitar. |Blues Jam Workshop
Meet other musicians and jam on the blues. Explore the pentatonic and modal scales and learn to construct a solo. Learn the shuffle, boogie, Texas-style and Memphis swing sounds. (Drummers and bass players attend free). Includes articles and music in tablature by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Howlin' Wolf, Freddie King, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, T-Bone Walker, and others. Meets on Tuesdays at 8:30
Cost is $40 for UMass Full Time Undergraduates and $70 for others for ten weeks plus a $3 fee for course materials payable to the instructor at the first class. Credit is available through the Division of Continuing Education for an additional fee. All guitar classes meet in Music Dept in the Fine Arts Center East.
