Guitar at Holyoke Community College
Holyoke Community College music alumns are successful in a wide variety of music careers!  Our alumns are teaching at all levelsóin elementary and secondary schools, at colleges, and as private instructors.  Our alumns are professional performers and composers and arrangers.  Our alumns are working in music businesses, in such areas as retail, the recording industry, instrument repair, and piano tuning.  Our alumns are active in the practice of music therapy.

The reason behind these success stories is that Holyoke Community College offers and Associate of Arts Degree in Music, a program of study specifically designed for transfer to four year colleges and universities.  Even more important is the fact that our environment which encourages individual achievement and fosters the pursuit of each studentís individual goals.

Entering a music degree program at most four year colleges is accomplished only through an applied audition and demonstration of competency in basic skills in music theory and ear training.  College level entrance assumes that the student reads music, has a theory background in key signatures, intervals, chords, and counting.  This is also true at HCC, so if you have acceptable skills, you are ready.

However, HCC recognizes the fact that not everyone has had the opportunity to develop these skills, and, therefore, has an ìopen doorî policy on admission.  This means that it is our goal to give each student the opportunity to gain these necessary skills for entering the degree program.  HCC offers a wide selection of general music courses which serves the dual purpose of life enrichment for all HCC students and preparatory studies for student seeking admittance to the AA Music Degree program.

For more information, simply call the Admissions Office at 413-552-2850.  If you further questions, call Daniel Oberholtzer, the Music Department Chair, at 413-552-2480.  Better yet, stop by and check out our campus.  The address is 303 Hometead Ave., Holyoke  MA  01040.  We look forward to meeting you!
