Millennium Trails of New England
The White House Millennium Program created the Millennium Trails
project, a national program that will recognize and celebrate
trails which honor the past and imagine the future. There are
three categories of trails within the Millennium Trails program.
The first category is The Community Trail 2000, for locally significant
trails. Local communities can designate their favorite trails
that have historical or future significance. The second category
is The Millennium Legacy Trail for the designation of trails
with statewide significance. There will be 52 of these trails
nominated by the 50 states plus the District of Columbia and
Puerto Rico. The third category of trails is the National Millennium
Trail. The trails picked in this category must have national
significance. They are usually historical in nature and span
several states (Millennium Trails, 1998).
Millennium Trail Results
The following table highlights the overall trail proposals by
governmental, non-governmental agencies, and this study for Millennium
Trail designations. The total length of all the Millennium Trail
project proposals discussed in this study is approximately 2134
miles. Of these projects 1184 miles (more than half) are already
existing hiking trails. The other 950 miles are proposed, either
by governmental and non-governmental agencies or by this study.
The six New England States are proposing 934 miles for the Millennium
Legacy Trails designation. The remaining 1200 miles fall into
the proposed National Millennium Trails designation.
