Massachusetts: The Metacomet-Monadnock Trail
This study proposed the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail (M&M Trail)
as a Millennium Trail for the state of Massachusetts. This hiking
trail is approximately 117 miles long and stretches north to
south in western Massachusetts. The history of the M&M Trail
dates back to the seventeenth century when King Philip (Chief
Metacomet) was actively trying to rid New England of European
settlers.
Connecticut: The Metacomet Trail and Farmington Canal Trail
The Metacomet Trail is this study's proposal for Connecticut's
Millennium Trail. This hiking trail is approximately 65 miles
long running north to south through central Connecticut. The
Metacomet Trail links into the M&M Trail near the Massachusetts
border. An alternate proposal by the New England Trails Advisory
Board (NETAB) is the Farmington Canal Trail. The Farmington Canal
Trail is a rail trail that travels through many of Connecticut's
historic industrial regions. The completed portions of this trail
are very popular with bikers and walkers.
Rhode Island: The North South Trail
Rhode Island's North South Trail, which runs along the western
border of the state, is this study's proposed Millennium Trail
for Rhode Island. It is a multi-use trail approximately 72 miles
long and it is the longest trail in Rhode Island. The North South
Trail passes through seven state-owned and managed forests. The
trail is popular with hikers, bikers, ATVers, and Horseback riders.

Maine: The Thoreau Trail
The Thoreau Trail, named after the famous writer and naturalist
Henry David Thoreau, is a proposed hiking loop that circles Maine's
spectacular north country. It is approximately 200 miles long
and travels through Baxter State Park. Maine's Advisory Board
contributed to the proposal of the Thoreau Trail for Millennium
Trail designation.
