History of Greenways: Results

The rich and varied landscape of Connecticut shaped the lives of it's residents in the nineteenth century. The landscape proved challenging on many fronts, however human toil coupled with Yankee ingenuity prevailed. The Farmington Canal and subsequent railroads greatly improved the movement of both people and goods in the second half of the century. Visionaries, such as Frederick Law Olmsted played a significant role in the American Parks Movement and left a lasting legacy in the state. The founders of the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association crafted a philosophy and agenda that continues to be successful today in preserving and protecting significant landscapes throughout the state. Their efforts as well as others also played a significant role at the National level where interest in land conservation and forestry was just developing.
