History of Greenways:
Introduction

 

The lay of the land in Connecticut has greatly influenced settlement patterns and the development of the state over time. This section begins with a brief look at the natural history of Connecticut, in particular the four physiographic regions that comprise the state. The development of parks and land designated for recreation uses is also presented in this section with an emphasis on Connecticut's leading role in the American Park Movement. This section concludes with a discussion of the rich cultural and historical resources that have influenced natural protection efforts in pre-twentieth century Connecticut.
