At the beginning of the twentieth
century Connecticut was experiencing growth in both in industry
and population that would continue to challenge the landscape.
The population at this time was nearly 1 million people. The
efforts of visionaries from the past few decades would shape
the growth of park development and land conservation efforts
for the next century.
This section focuses on twentieth century greenspaces and greenways
development from the beginning of the century up to current activities,
which are discussed in the next section. The emphasis for this
section is on protected natural resources in Connecticut, including
both federal and state protection efforts as well as the efforts
of non-governmental organizations (N.G.O.'s). This section also
discusses the many varied recreational resources within the state
including both the State Park development as well as the Blue
Blazed Hiking Trails that were begun in 1929. This section concludes
with a look at this century's historical and cultural resources
in Connecticut.
