The Illinois Researcher Information Service (IRIS) database is compiled by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It includes information on funding opportunities for all levels of academic study and research.

To access the database from the GSGS homepage, click on the "Funding" box. Next, click on "IRIS". Then you can start your search. Please note that this database can only be accessed if you are logged on with a UMass computer account.

After you have selected the IRIS option from our homepage, double-click on "IRIS Funding Opportunities", then click on "IRIS (www version)", from which point you can start your search.

IRIS Quick Search: The Quick Search option will produce results more quickly than the more detailed Fine Tuned Search option. To begin a quick search, click on "IRIS Quick Search."

At search screen:

  • Click on "Search all fields for" blank box and type in your keyword or phrase (e.g., communication). Then click on "Execute Search" to submit the search.

Result set will appear:

  • To move through the programs in your set of results, click on the up and down arrows on the right edge of your screen. To get more information about a particular program title, click on its name to follow the link. To get back to your list, click on the Back icon on the top left of your screen.

Other Handy Tips about IRIS:

  • You don't have to fill out every box in the search screen
  • Always enclose search phrases (more than one word) in quotation marks
  • When in doubt about a keyword, consult the IRIS Keyword Index
  • Upper or lower case doesn't matter
  • IRIS has automatic left- and right-hand truncation (i.e., you can use parts of words in your search and the program will find every funding opportunity that has that part of the word in it)
  • If you enter more than one search term in a box, separate the terms with AND, OR, or NOT
  • To limit your search to opportunities for graduate students only, use the IRIS Fine Tuned Search option and toggle the "Academic Qualifications" box

Printing: scroll to the top of the document you want to print. Then:

  • If your computer is connected to a printer, simply click on the Print icon.
  • If you want to mail your findings to your e-mail account, click on Options, then click on Mail and News Preferences. At "Your E-mail" prompt, type your e-mail address, then click on OK. Then click on File, followed by Mail Document. At "Mail To" prompt, type your e-mail address. Then click on Send.
  • If you want to save your findings to disk, click on File, then click on Save As. At the "Filename" prompt, type a memorable name for the document, ending with the suffix ".doc". Then, toggle the "Drive" prompt to the name of your disk drive, usually a:\ or b:\. Then click on OK.
