Examples of Grants and Fellowships for Entering and First Year Graduate Students

American Political Science Association, Minority Graduate Fellowships. This program is open to African American, Latino(a) or Native American graduate students in political science. Fellows receive $6,000 for one year of graduate study with the possibility of renewal for a second year.
AT&T Labs, Fellowships for Women and Minorities; Grants for Women and Minorities. The Fellowship program provides a stipend of approximately $13,000, tuition and fees to graduate students in science and engineering undertaking work in areas of interest to AT&T. The grant program provides up to $2,000 to cover expenses not generally covered by other awards, such as childcare or computer hardware and software purchasing.
Center for Arabic Study Abroad, Summer and Full Year Programs. Students who are committed to a career in Middle East Studies may apply for support to attend an intensive Arabic language study program in Cairo, Egypt. Students pay a program fee, but may be awarded from $3,000 to $10,000 to assist with tuition, airfare and living expenses.
Department of Education, Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program. Fellowships of $36,000 are available to students who at the time of application have not yet completed their first year of graduate study. Awards given to doctoral or MFA students in selected fields of the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
Ford Foundation, Predoctoral Fellowships for Minorities. African American, Alaskan Native, Mexican American, Native American, Native Pacific Islander and Puerto Rican students in a number of academic fields are eligible. Successful candidates receive an annual stipend of $14,000 plus $6,000 to cover tuition and fees.
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Hochschulsommerkurse; Summer Language Courses the Goethe Institutes; Summer Language Course at the University of Leipzig grant. These programs support several weeks of intensive language study in Germany. Stipends cover tuition, fees, room and partial board.
Institute for Humane Studies, Humane Studies Fellowship; Liberty and Current Issues Seminar Scholarship; Liberty and Society Seminar Scholarships; Liberty in Film and Fiction Seminar Scholarship. The Seminar Scholarships provide $1,000 to assist students interested in attending a seminar. Humane Studies Fellowships offers stipends of up to $12,000 for graduate students interested in the ideas of liberty.
Madison (James) Memorial Fellowship Foundation, Madison (James) Fellowship. These fellowships are designed to support current and future secondary school teachers of American history, government and social studies in grades 7-12. Award amounts vary, but are intended to cover tuition, fees, books and living expenses.
Mellon (Andrew W.) Foundation/Wilson (Woodrow) National Fellowship Foundation, Mellon (Andrew W.) Fellowships in Humanistic Studies. Annually up to 80 fellowships are awarded to exceptionally promising students preparing for careers in humanistic teaching and scholarship. Fellows receive a stipend of $14,000, tuition and fees for their first year of graduate school.
National Science Foundation, Graduate Research Fellowships. Graduate students in a variety of disciplines who have fewer than 30 credit hours are eligible. Fellows receive a stipend of $21,500 and an institutional allowance of $10,500 to cover tuition and fees for three years.
Sigma Xi, Grants-in-Aid of Research. Students in the physical, engineering, behavioral and life sciences are eligible for up to a maximum of $1,000 to support research projects. Students in the fields of astronomy and eye or vision research may apply for up to $2,500.
Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian offers a variety of internships, traineeships and research opportunities for graduate students who wish to take advantage of the Institute's facilities and staff expertise. The award details vary by program.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, STAR Graduate Environmental Education Fellowships. The purpose of this program is to support students pursuing advanced degrees in environmentally related fields. Fellows are invited to propose research projects to be conducted at EPA facilities, and are awarded $34,000 to cover tuition, fees, living stipend and research expenses.
Whitaker Foundation, Graduate Fellowship Program. Especially talented individuals pursuing graduate study in biomedical engineering may apply. Fellows receive a twelve month stipend of $17,000, tuition and fees up to $13,500 and $1,500 for professional development expenses.
