6. What kinds of workshops are offered by GSGS?
Departmental Workshops outline the funding application process; teach students how to search for programs in the funding databases; and introduce students to an array of funding opportunities in their field. These are available by request from faculty or interested groups of graduate students.

Workshops On Specific Funding Programs: Each fall semester GSGS offers detailed workshops on two major national fellowships such as the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, the Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships, or the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Research Abroad Program. The programs vary from year-to-year.

Proposal Writing Forums: In the Fall of 2005, GSGS began a new initiative under the Graduate School 's "Grants for Student Mentoring" program. A series of funding proposal development workshops were facilitated by UMass faculty with grant writing and reviewing experience. These were specifically designed for students currently in the process of drafting grant proposals and planning to apply to a funding program during the fall term. These workshops were very well received and we hope to continue them in the fall of 2006.

How To Find And Apply For Funding Workshop: For the Spring of 2006, GSGS is initiating another new workshop that will provide specific direction for students on using the funding databases to search for programs relevant to their research; go over the application process; address specifics about the proposal as the central part of a funding application; and speak to the importance of the match between funder and proposal. This session will be held in the Calipari computer lab in the Du Bois libraryl.
