Astronomy Doctoral Degree Requirements

The general requirements for the Ph.D. in Astronomy are those of the Graduate School. In addition, students are required to complete 12 courses in three areas: a) six introductory physics and astrophysics courses, b) four core astronomy courses, and c) two other graduate courses in astronomy, physics, or related fields. Students are expected to maintain an average of B or better in each of these areas, and are also required to take the seminar Astronomy 791, 792 every semester.

Admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. is based on successful completion of the coursework, and on two research projects conducted by the student, which are followed by oral examinations. After admission, students are expected to devote their major efforts toward research. A wide range of theoretical and observational research topics are possible.

There is no foreign language requirement for the Ph.D in Astronomy. A student must register for 18 credits of Astronomy 899, Doctoral Dissertation.
