Portfolio Submission
All applicants for Art Education, Studio Art, and Interior Design must submit slide portfolios in carousel trays. (Kodak Transvue 80 is requested, along with its normal box.) Slides not submitted in a carousel will be returned for proper format. Computer Arts applicants may also submit video tapes or films, with accom-panying descriptions. Photography applicants may be requested to submit original work at a later date.
Slides should be ready for projection — emulsion to the screen and upside down. The portfolio should consist of no more than 30 slides: at least 20 of work in the major area with the remainder in related areas such as drawing, etc. The work in the major area should be kept together and arranged in reverse chronological order so the most recent work will be viewed first. Each slide must be numbered and should include the applicant's name.
An accompanying slide list should indicate: 1) slide number, 2) applicant's name, 3) date of work, 4) size, and 5) medium. If you wish to have receipt of your portfolio acknowledged by the Art Department, include a self-addressed, stamped postcard.
Portfolios should be sent to: Director of Graduate Programs, Art Department, 359 Fine Arts Center, Box 32510, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA 01003-2510.
Application and Portfolio Deadline:
For Fall admission only—February 1
Return of Slides
Slides from accepted applicants are usually retained until the beginning of the academic year, at which time they can be picked up from the department's Graduate Office. Otherwise, portfolios will be returned after the selection process is completed, provided the necessary "SASE" is included. The Art Department is not responsible for portfolios left beyond six months.
S.A.S.E.
The preferred form of SASE is a return self-package or mailer (box or padded envelope), self-addressed with correct postage. Provide regular stamps. Overseas applicants may provide international coupons. Do not send metered tapes, personal checks or cash; the department cannot accommodate requests for C.O.D. Please indicate the desired means of return mail (e.g., first class, etc.).
Overseas Exception
Other than using international coupons, applicants from outside the U.S. and its territories may provide a postal or bank money order or a cashier's check (not personal checks) to cover the cost of returning their portfolios by U.S. mail only. The money order or bank check should be payable in U.S. dollars to: the Art Department, University of Massachusetts. It is the applicant's responsibility to determine the weight of the portfolio and the cost of return postage. This option is available only to international or overseas applicants, including Canada.
Questions regarding format or submission of the portfolio should be directed to the Art Department's Graduate Office, tel. (413) 545-6937.
