603 Theoretical Components of Nursing Science

Major approaches to theory development in the profession. Analysis of nursing the-ory and theories from related disciplines, to develop conceptual models for clinical practice. Limited to Nursing majors.

605 Advanced Health Assessment

Concepts and theories relating to comprehensive health assessment of individuals across the life span using skillful collection of data synthesized to formulate health problems and differential diagnoses.

610 Primary Care of Children, Adolescents and Young Adults

Evaluation of theory and research in the practice of primary care nursing with culturally diverse populations of children, adolescents, and young adults. Common health problems affecting this population presented with a focus on the health promotion and management of health disruptions. Social problems, health care policies, and practices which affect the delivery of primary health care emphasized.

615 Advanced Pathophysiology

Concepts and theories related to disorders of physiological processes which result in health alterations in the child and the adult. Alterations in normal body functions leading to disease and discomfort of the individual presented within an organizing framework. Clinical inferences from concepts and theories of pathophysiology and pharmacology presented in relation to clinical nursing practice in primary care.

Theories relating to disordered physiological processes resulting in health alterations in children and youth. Combines pathophysiologic with pharmacotherapeutic knowledge and treatment decisions.

617 Pharmacotherapeutics in Primary Care

Introduces advanced practice students to common drugs used in primary care practice across the life span. Prepares the student to assume prescriptive authority.

618 Psychopharmacology for Advanced Practice Nurses

Theories relating to disordered neurophysiological processes resulting in psychiatric alterations across the life span. Emphasis on the scientific basis for psychopharmacological intervention and evaluation for common health disorders.

620 Primary Care of Middle Aged and Older Adults

Evaluation of theory and research in the practice of primary care nursing with culturally diverse populations of middle aged and older adults. Common health problems affecting this population presented with a focus on the health promotion and management of health disruptions. Social problems, health care policies, and practices which affect the delivery of primary health care emphasized.

624 Special and Chronic Health Care Needs of Children and Youth (Community School Health Web-based course)

The role and function of advanced practice nurses in health care delivery to children and youth with special and chronic health care needs. Effective community-based responses developed.

625 Chronic and Complex Health Problems: Primary Care of Children, Adolescents and Young Adults

Examination of chronic and complex health problems affecting children and adolescents with a focus on the health promotion and management of selected health disruptions. Emphasis on examination of ethical and health care policies and practices which affect the delivery of primary pediatric health care.

630 Research Methodology in Nursing

Relationship between research and theory development and clinical practice in nursing. Includes research design, methods of data collection, and a variety of analytical procedures for interpreting results.

634 Methodologies of Community/School Health Assessment

Community assessment resource allocation, policy development, and techniques required to build community partnerships to address the health of school-aged populations and their families.

636 Advanced Concepts in Nursing

Concepts and theories related to human responses to biophysical, psychosocial, and cultural phenomena that impact on the provision of primary care services to individuals and families across the life span. Advances in the art and science of nursing, clinical therapeutics, related research, and nursing care evaluation strategies evaluated and analyzed.

640 Community Health Assessment

Using community assessment techniques, environmental and population characteristics are systematically examined from geographical, sociocultural, political, and economic perspectives to increase the effectiveness of the delivery of health services.

642 Teaching Nursing

Focuses on the dynamic, creative process of teaching and learning clinical nursing in preparation for competent, reflective nursing practice. Philosophies, theories, methodologies, and trends relevant to nursing education included.

645 Health Care Systems and Advanced Nursing Practice

Critical analysis of the health delivery system and major social, political, and economic trends that affect health care and nursing practice. Current issues and problems in professional nursing.

648 Concepts in Healthy Aging for Advanced Practice Nursing

Selected concepts, theories, and research related to maturation and healthy aging, integrated within the context of culture, the community, and society, with principles applied to advanced practice nursing.

Major mental health and health education problems and needs of children, adolescents, and their families. Techniques of assessment, program development, and intervention.

660 Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing with Individuals

Selected concepts, theories, and research related to advanced practice nursing with individuals with mental health care needs.

664 Advanced Practice Nursing of Adults and Elderly with Acute Health Care Needs

Selected concepts, theories, and research related to advanced practice nursing of adults and elderly with acute health care needs. Open to non-matriculated students.

665 Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing with Groups

Selected concepts, theories, and research related to group dynamics and advanced practice nursing with groups with mental health care needs.

668 Advanced Practice Nursing of Adults and Elderly with Chronic Health Care Needs

Selected concepts, theories, and research related to advanced practice nursing of adults and elderly with chronic health care needs. Open to non-matriculated students.

Selected concepts, theories, and research related to family dynamics and advanced practice nursing with families with mental health care needs.

682 Legal and Ethical Perspectives in Nursing Practice

Legal and ethical issues with implications for professional nursing practice. Examination of nursing's social contract and models for legal and ethical decision making in nursing. Open to non-matriculated bachelor's-prepared nurses.

Students participate with expert faculty in research on a variety of topics selected by the faculty.

Supervised practica provide clinical experience in the student's area of specialization, including: adult/gerontological advanced practice nursing; psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nursing; primary care advanced practice nursing; clinical teaching.

798 Advanced Seminar and Practicum

Supervised advanced practica provide intensive clinical experience in the student's area of specialization, including: adult/ge-rontological advanced practice nursing; psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nursing; primary care advanced practice nursing. Credit, 6.

Courses Required of All Students in the Ph.D. Program

Prerequisites to all courses are a Master's degree in Nursing and admission to the program. Doctoral nursing students must complete Philosophy of Science and an advanced statistics course in addition to the following required nursing courses. In addition to coursework, all students must complete a teaching and research assistantship and two advanced nursing electives, one teaching elective, and one cognate elective.

700 Philosophy of Science: Philosophical Foundations of Nursing Science

Prepares doctoral students to systematically analyze epistemological, ontological, and metatheoretical perspectives in the philosophy of science, while also considering the implications for scientific inquiry, theory development, and knowledge development in nursing.

710 Quantitative Methods in Nursing Research

Advanced study of designs, methods, instrumentation, and measurement for quantitative nursing research. Students develop a research prospectus.

720 State of the Discipline of Nursing

A critical examination of the current state of knowledge in the discipline. Students analyze, evaluate, and synthesize selected aspects of this knowledge.

730 Qualitative Methods in Nursing Research

Advanced study of major qualitative research designs and methods used to build substantive knowledge in nursing. Empha-sis placed upon experiential learning of methods and techniques to design studies and generate, analyze, and interpret data.

810 Advanced Nursing Research

Seminar designed to assist students in the preparation of a research proposal for the federal sector.

820 Emerging Nursing Theories

A critical analysis of the writings of selected nurse theorists. Includes development and application of criteria for developing theory in nursing science.

870 Doctoral Nursing Seminar

A forum for the development, refinement, and completion of student's doctoral dissertation research. Strategies appropriate to the research questions and relevant theoretical issues also explored.
