Environmental Institute
The Environmental Institute is a research unit of the Graduate School. Included within
the Institute is the Massachusetts Water Resources Research Center, the National Environmental
Technology Institute, the Office of Geographic Information and Analysis, the University
Archeological Services, and the Cooperative Marine Education
and Research Program, a joint effort with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The purpose of the Institute is
to provide "public service through research" on matters of broad environmental concern. The
Institute accomplishes its purpose by negotiating research and training contracts between the University
and public agencies and private firms.
The research and professional training activities of the Institute are conducted by teams of
faculty, staff, and graduate students in the academic and extension programs of the Amherst campus.
The Institute assists in the coordination of current research efforts and in developing new
programs between the University and state and federal environmental agencies. A prime role of the Institute
is to provide public and non-profit agencies access to University expertise that involves
combinations of academic departments, schools, and colleges.
It also assists faculty members and departments to prepare research proposals for, and subsequently administer, projects in which the size and
complexity of the effort calls for administrative support not available at the academic
department level. Associate Director: Dr. Richard P. Taupier. For further information, contact the Institute, tel.
