School of Education Curriculum

The following courses form the foundation of the School of Education's curriculum. Although these courses cover basically the specified subject areas each semester, they are modified from semester to semester to reflect the demands of professional education. To provide opportunities for individualized programs, the School also offers experimental courses, topical seminars on contemporary issues, field experiences, and an opportunity for individualized study

All courses carry 3 credits unless otherwise specified.

505 Documentary Filmmaking for Education

Introduction to practical filmmaking for educators and others to document their research and educational endeavors. Emphasis on making super-8 films using live-action photography and editing techniques.

510 The Teacher in the Middle and High School Classroom

Lecture, discussion, and field experience. Purpose, problems, issues, strategies and materials in the teaching of social studies, mathematics, science, or English at the middle and high school level; a critical examination as an aid to the development of a defensible rationale for teaching.

511 Teaching Mathematics in the Middle and High School

Lecture, discussion, field experience. Purpose, problems, issues, strategies, and materials in teaching mathematics at the middle and high school level; a critical examination as an aid to the development of a defensible rationale for teaching. Required for certification.

512 Teaching Science in the Middle and High School

Lecture, discussion, field experience. Purpose, problems, issues, strategies, and materials in teaching science at the middle and high school level; a critical examination as an aid to the development of a defensible rationale for teaching. Required for certification.

514 Teaching Social Studies in the Middle and High School

Lecture, discussion, field experience. Purpose, problems, issues, strategies, and materials in teaching social studies at the middle and high school level; a critical examination as an aid to the development of a defensible rationale for teaching. Required for certification.

515 Teaching English in the Middle and High School

Lecture, discussion, and field experience. Purpose, problems, issues, strategies and materials in the teaching of English at the middle and high school level; a critical examination as an aid to the development of a defensible rationale for teaching. Required for certification.

517 Introduction to Computer Use in Teaching

Introduces novices to uses of the computer in the teaching/learning process. Credit, 1-4.

518 Career Education: An Overview

Concept of career education; opportunity for student evaluation of methods and materials currently employed in bringing career education into the classroom.

519 Education and Public Policy

Selected issues and problems concerning interaction between education and politics at local, state, and national levels.

521 Teachers and the Law

Legal problems faced by teachers. Legal principles applicable to these problems, and the sources of authoritative information.

523 Vocational Student Organizations

Preparation for leadership roles for youth organizations in local schools and communities in urban and rural settings.

524 The Work of Middle and High School Teachers

Field-based: the work of middle and high school teachers in social and organizational context. Required for certification for English, math, science and social studies teachers.

526 Curriculum Development in International Education

Resources and concepts of curriculum development in international education. Students develop units that can be taught in elementary or secondary schools.

527 Introduction to the Uses of Computers in Education

Many areas of application of computer-related technology to schools, including instruction, research, administration, the systems approach, and general societal impact of the computer.

530 Economics of Education

An introduction to work by economists treating education as an investment in human capital. Review of the literature and discussion of the issues raised by such a general view of education.

532 Seminar in Curriculum Development in Vocational Technical Education

Curriculum development from the standpoint of problem areas; current research and response to social or technical changes.

533 Methods and Material: ESL/BIL

For those intending to work with students who speak a language other than English. Touches on a philosophy of instruction, basic speech, basic linguistics and instructional methodology.

534 Instructional Planning and Assessment

Development of perspective and processes for selection of objectives, learning activities, means of assessment. Required for certification of middle and high school subject specialists in English, math, science, and social studies.

535 Educational Media, Technology and Systems

Characteristics, capabilities, applications, and implications of a variety of media to a variety of educational strategies.

539 Film and Video in Education

Explores and encourages use of creative and stimulating films and videos in educational settings; techniques used by filmmakers; methods for structuring film discussions.

540 Educational Broadcasting

History of educational broadcasting. Current status, development, and availability of radio and television programming for educational purposes. Evaluation of radio and television in accordance with instructional objectives.

541 Educational Film Production

Theoretical data and project applications: students produce educational messages in motion picture format through use of portable videotape.

542 Contemporary Educational Philosophies

Critical examination of selected contemporary philosophies of education. Attention to social implications and to relevance to educational practice.

546 Educational TV Workshop

For teachers and teacher interns. The hardware of television; experimental use of television in solving educational problems.

548 Workshop: Educational and Institutional Racism

Focus on individual and institutional racism; emphasis on definitions, identifying evidence of racism in institutional and individual behavior, and developing skill in combatting both types.

551 Foundations of Education

Selected problems and issues in modern education through the discipline of educational sociology, educational history, educational philosophy, comparative education, or social psychology. Independent study or field experience optional. Possible foci are educational aims, societal expectation of the schools, church-state relations, professionalism, academic freedom, curriculum and methodological emphasis, urban education, and educational innovation.

553 Construction, Validation, and Uses of Criterion-Referenced Tests

Steps in test development, preparation of domain specifications, item review techniques, test assembly, standard-setting methods, assessment of reliability and validity, guidelines for conducting test evaluations, and test uses.

555 Introduction to Statistics and Computer Analysis I

Elementary descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and some programming concepts with a computer language (FORTRAN) for unique solutions of problems.

556 Education for Community Development

Concept of education as it functions among a wide range of agencies and organizations when quality of life in communities is the focus.

558 Managing Data in Educational Research

Using computers in research: editor, communication, data base, research design, data capturing, statistical analysis and graphical display software to plan, conduct, and report research studies. Credit, 1.

559 Curriculum Development in Multicultural Education

Curriculum theory, design, and resources for multicultural education. Students develop units that can be taught in elementary and secondary schools.

560 Issues in Instructional Methods for Special Education

Effective techniques for teaching children with "mild" or "moderate" special needs. Observational techniques, assessment, classroom management, and curriculum and curriculum modification.

561 Science Education in the Elementary Schools

For teachers or others who wish to update their knowledge of methods, materials, and curriculum. Laboratory approach.

566 Education and Development

Relationship between development of national and regional areas and education. Systems analysis introduced; areas for potential research projects identified.

567 Foundations of Bilingual ESL Multicultural (BEM) Education

Focus on legislation, court decisions, history, case studies, standards in certification, organization models, and cultural backgrounds in bilingual-multicultural education. Open to all. Taught in English.

568 Curriculum Development in Urban Education

Development of innovative curricula for urban schools; kinds of curriculum development relevant to inner city environments. A post-urban internship: lectures, seminars, and field experience.

569 Practicum in International Education

Supervised practical experience in various areas of international education. Credit, 1-6.

570 Professional Orientation to School Counseling

An orientation to the profession of school counseling, focusing on the conceptual-ization of a balanced approach between prevention and treatment services, within the context of a comprehensive developmental guidance program.

571 Urban Community Relations

Interrelationship of inner-city communities and established power within the school system, community control, participation, and decision making in education and development of alternatives in power relationships. Lecture, discussion, and field experience.

580 Curriculum Models in Early Childhood Education

Purposes, structure, and methods of current ECE models. Beliefs regarding nature of child development and learning, and importance of education assumed by each model.

582 Curriculum Adaptations and Development for Bilingual Classrooms

Examines the linguistic and pedagogical rationales for developing curricula and strategies for adapting standard curricula and materials to meet the needs of students in bilingual classrooms.

588 Teaching About the Puerto Rican Experience

For teachers, prospective teachers, and other professionals. Basic introduction to Puerto Rican history, culture, experiences in the U.S. and strategies for implementing this understanding in curriculum.

Psychological factors in career decision-making theory, job classification systems, vocational assessment, career information and placement. Prerequisites: Educ 570 and 705.

608 Helping from a Racial Perspective

Exploration of the dynamics of same race and cross race helping interactions. Analysis of impact of social programming on helping relationships. Critical analysis of current counseling techniques and theories related to multiracial helping.

611 Recent Developments in Secondary Science

Scope and sequence of the science curriculum; rationale, content, and implications for different student populations of selected curricula. Prerequisite: teaching experience.

612 Systems Management in Education

The major concepts and problems of planning, budgeting, information systems, institutional research and evaluation in educational management.

613 New Developments in Secondary School Social Studies

Comparative study and evaluation of recent programs and practices in secondary school social studies.

614 History and Philosophy of Vocational Education

Appreciation for history and philosophy of occupational education. Investigation of occupational education development at local, state, and national levels. Approved by Massachusetts Department of Education for academic and vocational teachers and coordinators.

617 Law and Higher Education

Focus on judicial resolution of conflicts between students, teachers, and administrators in such areas as due process, equal protection, privacy, freedom of expression, negligence, and accountability.

618 Public Policy, Education and the Law

Legal, educational, and policy dimensions of conflicts between teachers, students, parents, and administrators concerning current issues (e.g., freedom of expression, racial and sexual discrimination, due process, educational malpractice).

620 Graduate Seminar in the Methods of Teaching English

Methods course for graduate students preparing to teach high school or junior college English. Critical issues and new areas of emphasis in curriculum.

621 Workshop in Reading and Language Arts

Advanced methodology course for inservice teachers and graduate students. Students design curriculum in reading and language arts for the elementary classroom.

623 Evaluation for Nonformal Education

Concepts, issues, and techniques pertinent to use of evaluation in nonformal education programs; methods of relating evaluation to program planning; adaptation of approaches to international and domestic program constraints. Prerequisite: prior field experience in nonformal education of human services programs; acquaintance with standard planning and evaluation literature desirable.

625 Staff Development Plans and Procedures

Construction and implementation of staff development models for school inservice; human/social services; business; nonprofit organizations; education in developing countries. Includes political, financial, ideational issues.

631 Laboratory in Developmental Counseling/Therapy

Interviewing and counseling psychology skills using systemic training frameworks with video practice.

632 Principles of Educational and Psychological Testing

For education and psychology majors. Major uses and types of educational and psychological tests. Reliability and validity issues and approaches. Use of norms tables and reporting scores. Construction of tests. Selection and evaluation of tests. Introduction to many aptitude, achievement and personality tests. Testing controversies.

634 Strategies for Institutional Change I

Two aspects of changethe diffusion of knowledge and its utilization in practice (first semester). Opportunities for independent study and field internships, if additional formal education desired (second semester).

635 Issues in Literacy Program Development

Analysis of basic concepts and issues related to adult literacy efforts in Third World and domestic settings. Identification of approaches and needs for planning, implementation, and research in field of adult literacy.

637 Policy Issues in Economics of Education

Selected issues in the economics of education human capital and returns to education; public costs and benefits, finance plans for equity; students' options for efficiency; performance indicators; school effectiveness and community development, and dual labor markets.

638 Preproduction Creativity of Educational Films

How to visualize ideas, concepts and curricula, utilizing all video and cinematographic techniques of live action, animation, cuts, dissolves, freeze frames, slow motion, etc. to communicate them interestingly and effectively.

640 Materials Development for Formal and Nonformal Education

Exposure to low-level educational media for nonformal education in overseas field settings. Selecting appropriate type of material, developing prototypes, carrying out field tests, and revising sample materials.

641 Curriculum Development for Adult and Nonformal Education

Focus on the development of curriculum programs to help prepare adults and nonformal educators. Emphasizes design of curriculum for rural/community development.

643 Naturalistic Assessment of Early Childhood Education

Application of principles of ecological and environmental psychology, and naturalistic research techniques to the assessment of children's development in pre- and primary school classrooms. Students complete an evaluation. First of a two-course sequence.

644 Early Childhood Program Improvement

Application of ecological data to development of child care and early education programs. Students complete analysis of behavior and environmental data gathered in EDUC 643. Consent of instructor required. Second of a two-course sequence.

645 Inquiry into American Schooling

Contemporary educational practices. Emphasis on promising developments in curriculum, staffing, and organization of public schools, past and future innovations.

646 Administration and Supervision of Occupational Education

Administrative competencies unique to vocational/technical education programs. Structured to meet administrative credential requirements in vocational education.

647 Methods and Materials In Special Education

Early childhood/special needs strategies, programs, and materials. Students analyze and develop materials for cognitive language, motor, self-help, socialization, and emotional development, including Individual Education Plan.

648 Oppression and Education

Theory, practice, and manifestations of oppression. Various educational methods and techniques of combatting oppression.

649 Training for Nonformal Education

Development of knowledge and skills needed for successful design and implementation of training programs for personnel in nonformal education, human services, or community development.

651 Teaching Mathematical Problem Solving

Problem-solving modes demonstrated, critiqued, and discussed. Related issues in math education. Reflection on cognitive processes; connection to NCTM standards.

655 Ethnic Literature and the Adolescent Experience

How adolescent members of minority groups respond to problems stemming from acculturation and discrimination, their searches for self-identity and ways to regain their heritages.

656 Introduction to Statistics and Computer Analysis II

Elementary descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and some programming concepts for unique solutions of problems. Prerequisite: Educ 555 or consent of instructor.

657 Introduction to Urban Education

Discussion groups survey urban and suburban schools, process of learning in urban classrooms, effects of the present curriculum, and various innovative techniques applicable to urban schools.

660 Language Intervention Strategies for Teachers of Special Needs Children

Identifies the theories of language acquisition, normal language development, and language disorders. Examines language assessment strategies, select assessment and intervention strategies appropriate for integrated settings, and conducts two language samples.

661 Educational Research Methods I

Essential skills for conducting educational research. Stating purposes and hypotheses, instrument development, research design, sampling, data analysis, interpreting results, and preparing research reports.

664 Research in School and Counseling Psychology

Single subject group research design. Sampling, interview and questionnaire construction, statistical methods, and development of research proposal. Credit, 1-3.

665 Organization for Curriculum Development: Basic Principles in Curriculum and Instruction

Procedures and criteria for curriculum development. Determining goals, creating and organizing learning opportunities, and evaluating effectiveness of curricula. Small group setting.

667 Theories of Discovery and Learning in Science Education

Discovery processes in science and in science students, nature of reasoning, learning, and understanding through mental models. Research studies of factors affecting learning processes. Conceptual change and cooperative learning methods.

668 Children and Youth with Learning Disabilities

Introduction to causes and characteristics of learning disabilities and educational programs and strategies for learning disabled children and youth. Includes overview of assessment techniques and current research.

669 Historical Perspectives in Special Education

Historical and legal landmarks in special education from a national and international perspective. Sociological, philosophical, and cultural perspectives addressed. A field component, introduction of the IEP, and the community special education approach.

670 Language and Language Learning

Basic concepts from sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics; emphasis on topics having pedagogical implications for teaching reading, writing, and language in elementary and secondary schools.

671 Introduction to Piaget for Elementary Educators

Piaget's theory of intellectual development; application of this theory to teaching and to education in general. Prior teaching experience helpful.

673 Advanced Child Development

Basic theories and findings of modern developmental psychology; their implications for educational practice. Prerequisite: introductory course in child development or early childhood education.

674 Leadership in Higher Education

Analysis of major issues central to understanding of the possibilities and problems of leadership in higher education.

676 Assessment of Young Children with Special Needs

Introduces early childhood/special needs assessment tools and strategies. Students analyze assessment tools and assess one young child in one developmental area. Emphasis on observational techniques. Prepracticum.

677 Foundations of Bilingual ESL Multicultural (BEM) Education

Introduction to multicultural education including historical and cultural dimensions of racial and cultqural minorities, biases in schooling, philosophies of cultural pluralism, and implementation strategies.

681 Teaching of Reading and Writing on the Secondary Level

Principles, methods and materials for teaching reading and writing to adolescents. For students preparing to teach in middle and high schools.

682 Children's Literature

Lectures, demonstration, discussions, practicum and readings surveying the field. Content areas such as comparative folklore, poetry, and nonfiction, approaches for classroom use, contemporary problems, and the needs of specific populations.

683 Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling Psychology

Exploration of legal and ethical issues that abound in counseling and counseling psychology. Current legal and professional thought explored drawing on actual court cases and clinical problems.

684 Reading, Writing, Language, and Thinking

Contributions of cognitive, linguistic and sociocultural theories to understanding reading and writing processes. Implications for reading, writing, and language instruction.

685 Developmental Psychopathology

Introductory overview of major dysfunctional behavior syndromes commonly encountered in educational and mental health settings. Topics include early detection, classification, referral, and remediation of behavioral problems.

687 Language Development and Literacy

Current theory and research on children's development of oral and written language and its implications for reading, writing, and language instruction. Educ 670 or 684 recommended.

691A Assessment Practices in Higher Education

Provides future administrators with the background and individual understanding necessary to address assessment appropriately in whatever postsecondary educational context they find themselves. Of possible value also to students interested in K-12 assessment.

691E Social Issues in Education

Overview of characteristics and princi-ples common to oppression as they function on the individual, cultural, and institutional level. Seminars and workshops included.

Introduction to a variety of disciplines and methods used to study teaching and learning.

692D Seminar in Higher Education

Overview of higher education system in the United States through an examination of the major types of colleges and universities, missions and goals, organizational structures, patterns of governance and policymaking, functions of departments and professional schools, roles and responsibilities of faculty members and administrators, and the needs of traditional and nontraditional students.

692F Special Education Law

Focus on legal issues involved in mandating educational programs for handicapped students.

692I Methods in Adult Literacy

Examination and assessment of a variety of approaches, methods and techniques currently used in literacy instruction.

692J Program Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation in Special Education

Culmination of student's program; and focus on concept of community special education and "networking." Includes comprehensive program design within specialty area and components such as philosophy, goals, activities, strategies, management plan, and budget.

693A Social Issues Training and Educational Methods

Introduction to paradigms that facilitate the design and delivery of training/education interventions that focus on social justice and social diversity. Prerequisite: Educ 648.

693D Assessment of Special Needs Children

Issues in early childhood assessment, types of norm-referenced, and criterion-referenced assessment, developmental scales, formal and informal observation techniques, and team process.

693H Hypnotic Techniques and Patterns of Communication

Focus on the hypnotic approaches to ther-apy of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. Uses of trance, hypnotic phenomena, metaphor, and paradox discussed, demonstrated, and practiced in class.

693J Integrative Seminar

Provides closure to the master's or doctoral concentration in Higher Education. Students reflect on their academic development and write importantly and suggestively during the course of the semester. Intended as a final course for the Higher Education concentration. For Higher Education students only.

693O Student Development Theory and Practice

Seminar. For those who intend to work primarily with adult learners and/or wo-men in training situations or educational settings.

694G Etiology and Characteristics of Young Children with Special Needs

Causal factors and characteristics of young children with special needs. Topics include terminology, issues, programming, characteristics (cognitive, perceptual, emotional, and motor), and service delivery models.

697A Women in Higher Education

Explores the roles and status of women in higher education in America as students, faculty, and staff.

697G Resource/Consulting Strategies and Techniques of Moderate Special Needs Teacher

Focus on planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of resource programs, as well as strategies and techniques that work best for mainstreaming mild to moderately handicapped students.

697K Computer Learning with LOGO

Uses of multimedia microcomputers and LOGO for learning and constructionist teaching, with focus on personal learning.

697O Teaching Math with Computers

Introduction to using a programming language for teaching mathematics. Introduction to microcomputers and computing software; workshops on selected topics in mathematics; examples of problem solving by programming; demonstrations of methods for teaching with computers. Strategies for integrating computers in math curriculum; related issues in mathematics education. Resources for follow-up study.

698O Practicum in Higher Education

Independent practicum arrangement with faculty member. Student must complete contract.

701 Practicum for School Guidance

Field experience under supervision. For students in final part of Master's program. Consent of instructor required. Credit, 3-9.

702 Research in Occupational Education

Aims to develop competencies in design of research in vocational education. Identifying specialty topic areas, reviewing research associated with those areas, developing research methods.

703 Administration of Guidance and Psychological Services in Schools and Communities

Administration of counseling psychology and pupil, personnel, and community programs in terms of personnel, functions, facilities, institutional integration, and data processing. Consent of instructor required.

704 Social-Cognitive Development and the Helping Relationship

Survey of Neo-Piagetian social cognitive developmental theories and applications.

705 Psychological Assessment

Review of personality, visual-motor, achievement and interest tests and their interpretation, selection, and administration. Standardization, reliability, and validity; case-study procedures; ethical considerations; and problems in human assessment. Knowledge of elementary statistics helpful.

706 Workshop in Science Education

Selected problems in curriculum and instruction in science. Credit, 3-6.

707 Seminar in Counseling Psychology

Selected professional problems, ethical issues; relationship of counseling psychology to society (Master's Section).

708 Cognitive Assessment

Instruction and personal supervision in administration, scoring, and interpretation of most used psychological tests such as the WISC-R, WAIS-R, WPPSI-R, and Stanford Binet. Prerequisite: Educ 705.

709 Seminar in Reading

Content varies each semester. For doctoral students to explore current issues and research in depth.

710 Seminar in Mathematics Education

Survey of recent developments in elementary mathematics education and their implications for exploring mathematics in elementary and middle schools.

711 Recent Developments in Secondary Mathematics

Critical evaluation of current literature, research, and studies in curriculum and teaching of secondary school mathematics. Prerequisites: Educ 511 and teaching experience.

712 Recent Developments in Secondary English

Critical evaluation of current literature, research yearbooks, and experiments in curriculum and teaching of English. Prerequisites: Educ 515 and teaching experience.

713 Planning for Urban Schools

Through economic analysis of schooling, focus on developmental strategies for urban administrators, program specialists, and community organizers.

715 Secondary School Curriculum

Factors influencing the secondary school curriculum, organization of the curriculum, and goals of the secondary school; current developments and elements desirable in the curriculum of typical secondary schools. Prerequisite: teaching experience or consent of instructor.

716 Workshop in Reading Instruction

Seminar for advanced M.Ed. and C.A.G.S. students to explore holistic literacy evaluation, teacher-researcher theory and practice, and professional writing. Emphasis on implementation of teacher-researcher project.

719 Theory and Practice of Nonformal Education

Nonconventional approaches to development of human resources in Third World. Includes conceptual issues in nonformal education, program training, materials development, management.

720 Developing Theories for Education

Educational problems facing developing nations as they endeavor to use the schools as an ameliorative agent. Economic factors and political considerations influencing educational planning in divergent cultures; allocation of educational resources; confrontation between old and new cultural values.

721 Research Design for International Education

Introduction to research methods; students enabled to design and carry out field studies in international education. Techniques used in various social sciences; examples of their application to problems in international education. Survey methods, attitude and value analysis, interviewing and participant-observation techniques and research design. Models of design and techniques presented for critique. Each student sets up a research design and method outline for a specific project.

724 Language and the Teaching of Writing

Explores implications for teaching writing; the structure of language; language acquisition; language and thought; and the interaction of language with race, social class, and gender.

725 Externship in Business and Industry

Supervised field experience in industry, business, research organizations, or public agencies relevant to student's area of specialization. Planned individually by student, cooperating business, and vocational-technical education staff prior to enrollment. Credit, 1-6.

726 Fundamentals of Educational Administration

Introduction to general school administration, the relation of public education to the cultural pattern, and organization and practices in school administration.

727 Administering Elementary Schools

The principal's responsibilities, organization of school office, scheduling, use of school facilities, curriculum organization, staff relationships, and place of the school in the community. Prerequisite: teaching experience.

728 Administering Secondary Schools

Includes housing, finance, scheduling, the library, guidance, cafeteria, public relations. Prerequisite: teaching experience.

729 Public School Finance

Economics of public education, sources of school revenue, taxation, and federal, state and local plans of school fiscal support. Prerequisite: Educ 726.

731 Structural Equations Modeling

A unified treatment of the linear factor model and related models from the perspective of structural equations models. Prerequisites: Educ 772 or consent of instructor.

732 Psychology of Career Development

Theories of vocation choice; related literature and research. Analysis of world of work; impact of such factors as technology, demography, social structure, automation, age, and sex on career and person-al development; implications for educa-tional institutions. Prerequisite: Educ 607.

733 Seminar in International Education
