University of Massachusetts Abroad
The International Programs Office, through its University of Massachusetts Abroad
program, offers a wide variety of international exchange and overseas study programs. Those listed
below offer structured opportunities for graduate students. In addition, there are many overseas
programs which may assist graduate students in fulfilling foreign language requirements. Graduate
students may also consider independent research abroad as part of their graduate programs.

Programs listed below may be suspended under exceptional circumstances due to conditions in the host
country.
Freiburg/Baden-Württemberg Program
The University of Massachusetts exchange program with Germany, established in 1964,
was expanded in 1983 to include all nine universities in the state of Baden-Württemberg:
Freiburg, Heidelberg, Hohenheim, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Tübingen, and Ulm. Among
the universities virtually all academic disciplines are available, including humanities and social
sciences, engineering, business, natural science, and agriculture. A
University of Massachusetts faculty member serves
as Resident Director at the program's office in Freiburg each year.
Both graduate and upper-division undergraduate students with
a GPA of at least 2.5 are eligible to apply for the academic year or semester. Proficiency in German is not essential for
graduate studies, especially in the sciences and engineering. Scholarships are available.

Year and Semester Program in China
Students may study Chinese language, literature, culture, and history at Fudan University
in Shanghai and at Shaanxi Normal University in Xi'an. All courses are taught in Chinese by
the faculty of the host institutions, and up to 30 undergraduate credits can be earned. Graduates with
an interest in Chinese are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be in good academic standing
and have a minimum of one year of college-level Mandarin Chinese by the program start. To

Year and Semester Program in Taiwan
Located in Taichung, Taiwan, the University of Massachusetts Tunghai University
exchange program offers coursework at intermediate and advanced levels in Chinese. Both undergraduates
and non-degree graduates are eligible to apply, and up to 30 undergraduate credits may be earned.
Applicants should have a minimum of one year of college-level Mandarin Chinese by the program

Year and Semester Program in Paris
The University of Massachusetts sponsors an academic year and semester program in
France featuring residence in Paris. Students of widely varied majors can enhance their knowledge
of French language and culture while taking courses in French institutions of higher education such
as Paris VII, Institut Catholique, the Institut de Sciences Politiques and Paris Dauphine (business
and economics). A special feature of the program is the course on French theater offered in the
spring semester. The program begins in mid-September with a two-week orientation in Paris. Students
may live in rented rooms or a dormitory at the Cité universitaire. The program offers excursions to
acquaint students with sites of historical and cultural interest. Applicants should have completed
two years of college French or equivalent when the program begins. For additional information

Summer Program at Oxford
A six-week summer program at Trinity College, Oxford, takes place from July to
mid-August, offering courses in British literature, art and architecture, politics, history, and law. All courses
are taught by British faculty, and the Bodleian Library is available for research. Evening lectures,
theater trips to Stratford to see Royal Shakespeare Company performances, and field trips
supplement course offerings. Enrollment is open to students inside and outside the University. Admission
is competitive. We seek motivated students, competent in writing and willing to apply
themselves seriously to tutorial instruction. Costs, excluding airfare, are under $4,150 for the six weeks.

Summer Program at Salamanca
The Spanish Department sponsors one four-week summer program in July at the
Colegio Hispano Continental in Salamanca, Spain. Instruction is by University of Massachusetts faculty,
the staff of the Colegio, and visiting faculty. Graduate course offerings include Hispanic
Literature, Linguistics, Culture, and the teaching of Spanish. Six University of Massachusetts graduate
credits can be earned in the graduate and advanced undergraduate programs, and nine in the
language program.
Students may elect to live either with families or in dormitories. For an application,

European Studies Program in Anthropology
The Anthropology Department offers a field program in anthropology open to graduate
and advanced undergraduate students in anthropology. Lasting for a period of from four to seven
months, the course is designed to provide serious students with an extended period of field research in
Europe under the guidance of an experienced field-worker.
Prerequisites for participation in the program include a working knowledge of the language
required for field research and prior course work in both field methods and in the culture area
where research is to be conducted. Students interested in participation in the program should submit to
the program director a proposal outlining the research they hope to accomplish. The proposal should
be submitted at the beginning of the fall semester preceding the spring in which the applicant wishes
to participate in the program. A format for such a proposal, as well as additional information about
the program, is available from the European Studies Program Committee, Anthropology
Department, Machmer Hall.
Summer Program in Shanghai, China and Taichung, Taiwan
The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures sponsors an eight-week, 10-credit
summer course in Chinese language at Fudan University in Shanghai and at Tunghai University in
Taichung, Taiwan. Although only undergraduate credit is granted, graduates are eligible to apply.
Minimum requirements for admission are good academic standing and one year of college-level
Mandarin Chinese. Courses are taught by the staff of Fudan and Tunghai universities. To apply, contact
