German 797L: German Social Theory from Marx to Marcuse
Prof. Sara Lennox

This course will explore German tradition of Western Marxist thought that stretches from Marx, writing in the first half of the nineteenth century to Herbert Marcuse, whose theory inspired protesting students in the 1960s and 1970s. After examining the texts of Marx most important for these German thinkers, we will investigate Rosa Luxemburg's critique of the Bolshevik Revolution and her arguments for the necessity of mass democracy and Georg Lukács's attempt to explain why Western European workers after 1917 didn't follow the Russian example and choose revolution themselves. We'll then turn to the Critical Theory of the “ Frankfurt School ” (Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Marcuse, and Walter Benjamin (a more peripheral member)who confronted the task of explaining why European workers not only failed to oppose fascism decisively but were themselves often susceptible to its allure. We will analyze the ways in which they which they integrated ideas of Max Weber, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud into Marxism to develop theoretical paradigms explaining how advanced capitalism could induce citizens of bourgeois democracies to consent to their own domination. We will also ask how they were able to ground their own opposition and what alternative models for liberation they advanced.
The course is premised on the assumption that in some ways the ideas of these thinkers retain theoretical and political relevance, but in other ways their thought has been drawn into question both by subsequent theoretical developments and by changed historical circumstances. Perhaps we may even conclude that some positions the theorists take were never theoretically, historically, or practically legitimate or warranted. In the spirit of Marxist critique, course meetings will be organized around debates: each class session will begin with one student presentation that makes the best possible case for the particular thinker's continued importance and one presentation that outlines the thinker's limitations. Though class discussions will focus mainly on close readings of the thinkers' texts, we will also investigate the rootedness of this thought in particular historical conditions and the relevance of the thought for praxis today.
Students will be expected to write brief weekly response papers and a research paper on a topic to be determined in discussion with the instructor.
Course open to advanced undergraduates by permission of instructor.
