I studied German and history at Minnesota State University in Mankato. After spending a semester abroad in Lutherstadt-Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt, I became seriously interested in the GDR. In 2004 I wrote my senior thesis on the expectations and dissatisfactions of reunification in East Germany. After completing my B.A., I spent a year in Saxony teaching English at Wermsdorfer Mittelschule through the Fulbright TA program. The following year I studied at the Paris-Lodron University in Salzburg through Bowling Green State University. At BGSU I wrote an M.A. thesis titled “The Post-Reunification Aufarbeitung of the SED-Dictatorship.” The thesis focuses both on the political and legal attempts at coming to terms with wrongdoings in the GDR, as well as the literary and filmic contributions to this process. As of right now, the GDR has been my primary focus, but I have many interests within the realm of modern German history and culture, as well as Germany in a global context.
