Ready for Life

Peter Kahane, born in Prague in 1949, studied at the Film and Television Academy in Potsdam-Babelsberg. He joined East Germany’s DEFA Studio as an assistant director, before debuting as a director with Women’s Work. Two films then focused on the situation facing young people in 1980s East Germany: the love story Ready for Life and Ete and Ali, a prizewinning coming-of-age story. The Architects, filmed as the Berlin Wall was being dismantled, is his most politically critical and best-known film; it screened at MoMA in New York in 2005. After German unification, Kahane continued working as a director and scriptwriter for film and television and, in 2007, directed his first documentary, Tamara, about the legendary East German rock icon.
