Your Community, Your UMass
The UMass Amherst campus will be abuzz with activity this Labor Day weekend welcoming new and returning students for the kickoff of the 2018–19 academic year. This year's welcoming theme is Your Community, Your UMass.
First-year students officially join the UMass community and jump right into orientation activities following their arrival on Friday, August 31. They will immediately begin learning about the campus, becoming familiar with community opportunities and expectations, meeting new friends, and joining in a full slate of fun activities designed to help them prepare for their collegiate career and create their own UMass community. Get-acquainted activities, including First Night festivities in all residential areas and the Big U carnival on Haigis Mall (featuring Baby Berk, carnival games, bowling, bounce houses, snow cones, cotton candy, and more) make their first night on campus memorable.
Throughout the weekend as students adapt to their new home, they will explore #40DaysofUMass to learn about academic resources and connect with classmates socially and in their areas of study. They will meet new classmates and neighbors as they compete in various games and activities, such as bean bag toss, Spikeball, Kan Jam, outdoor volleyball and badminton, and dodgeball during UPlay Jamboree, and join in performances, interactive games, carnival activities, and contests at UFest. Students will venture into Amherst to learn more about the downtown and the surrounding area. A Dinner Conversation: Many Voices, One Community, is a special opportunity for new students to gather at the Mullins Center to experience international cuisine and cultural performances, and participate in conversations about the many differences that make UMass a strong and inclusive living and learning community.
On Monday, Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy will greet students and officially open the semester at New Students Convocation, after which they will gather for their class picture and then join the entire campus for the Welcome BBQ kicking off the academic year.
#40DaysofUMass continues through the first several weeks of the semester with activities, events, and open houses that include an activities expo, community service fair, UMass Night Out, athletic games, and more.
