Welcome to UMass
The University of Massachusetts Amherst welcomes new and returning students to campus over the Labor Day weekend for the opening of the 2017–18 academic year.
From the time they begin arriving on Friday, September 1, for Fall New Students Orientation, new first-year students will begin learning about the campus, becoming familiar with community opportunities and expectations, and meeting new friends through an array of activities designed to help them create their own UMass. A host of get-acquainted activities are planned in the residence areas for their first night on campus, including a rock slide, mechanical shark, caricature artist, climbing wall, obstacle courses, and much more.
Throughout orientation weekend as students adapt to their new home, they will learn about key academic resources and connect with classmates socially and in their areas of study. They will compete in various games and activities, such as bean bag toss, Spikeball, Kan Jam, outdoor volleyball and badminton, kickball, and dodgeball during UPlay Jamboree, and they can join together in performances, interactive games, carnival activities, and a sidewalk chalk contest at UFest. They will explore Amherst and beyond to learn more about the community and surrounding areas, and they will experience the university’s culture at A Dinner Conversation: Many Voices, One Community, a campus gathering for all new students at the Mullins Center that will feature international cuisine, performances, and conversations about all the differences that make UMass a strong and inclusive living and learning community.
Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy will officially greet them at New Students Convocation, after which they will gather for their class picture and then join the entire campus community for the Welcome BBQ kicking off the academic year.
Welcome to UMass Amherst continues through the first few weeks of the semester with activities, events, and open houses that include, in addition to the Welcome BBQ, an activities expo, community service fair, UMass Night Out, athletic games, and more.
