Floating Platforms for Offshore Wind
This work is centered on experimentally analyzing flow-induced motion of various platform configurations in flow, and methods by which this motion can be mitigated. Flow visualization and high-speed video recordings were conducted over a range of flow velocities in the FSI lab water tunnel for scale models of various body geometries and helical strake placements. While for a bare hull figure-eight type trajectories were observed, it is possible to control this response by selectively placing strakes at the section of the hull where the flow is exciting the system. Flow visualization used neutrally-buoyant fluorescent ink with ultraviolet illumination in order to better capture the local vortex structures.
