Hail nets cover a young Braeburn orchard near Bolzano. Hail is common during the summer months, and with expensive investment in yourng orchards and new varieities, some growers are installing hail nets as insurance. When I was in South Tyrol in 2001, a sever hail storm centered near Bolzano hit 4,000 hectares (almost 10,000 acres), with moderate to heavy damage depending on location.
