French and Italian Studies
French and Francophone Studies and Italian Studies are programs in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Our mission is to provide outstanding training leading to the BA, MA, and MAT in French and Francophone Studies and to the BA and MAT in Italian Studies. The curricular emphasis in these two programs on breadth and diversity of coverage, at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels, is commensurate with the campus mission to maintain its nationally recognized profile as the flagship campus within the University of Massachusetts system.
Our programs serve a large constituency, including not only Majors, Double Majors and Minors, but also students who elect French or Italian to satisfy the language requirement, as well as a large number of students who decide to take our courses beyond the intermediate level in the areas of language skills and literary and cultural studies. We offer twelve General Education courses. Our students come from many different areas of the University: Commonwealth College; Humanities and Fine Arts; Natural Sciences and Mathematics; Social and Behavioral Sciences; Food and Natural Resources; Engineering; Management; Nursing; Public Health, and Education. One of our important functions is to prepare students to teach French and Italian at the secondary levels. We offer programs in this area at the undergraduate and graduate levels and cooperate with the School of Education to prepare students to earn a Massachusetts teaching certificate valid for middle and high school teaching (grades 5-12). We also provide instruction to students from Continuing Education; to those in the Bachelor With Individual Concentration and in the University Without Walls; to students from the four colleges in the Valley, and to students on exchange from other states and from France, Italy, and many other countries. Our graduate program in French and Francophone Studies offers a broad range of advanced courses in literature, civilization, literary and cultural theory, and issues pertaining to Francophone cultures worldwide.
