French and Francophone Studies
In the field of French and Francophone Studies, we maintain a twofold objective: to enable our students to achieve a competent command of the French language in its spoken and written forms, and to help them develop an in-depth familiarity with the cultures and societies of both France and the French-speaking world.
To this end, we offer a wide variety of courses and programs that enable students to prepare for careers in teaching, research, translation, and communication; enhance the appreciation of literature and build advanced skills in literary and critical scholarship; and to develop a broad-based knowledge of the intellectual traditions, the social and political histories, and the cultural institutions of France and other societies worldwide in which the French language has gained ground as an official or social currency.
Our strong tradition of interdisciplinary curriculum innovation and our flexible array of program requirements permit and encourage our students to combine their programs of study with majors, minors, or certificate programs in other fields, such as Political Science, Art History, and Anthropology.
We strongly recommend our sponsored program in Paris to all our sophomore- and junior-level students interested in improving their command of the French language, and in enriching their knowledge of French culture. They may elect to participate for a semester or for the entire academic year.
Among our faculty are scholars recognized nationally and internationally as distinguished in their respective fields, enabling the program to uphold its commitment to excellence in teaching and research at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels.
