University of Massachusetts Amherst

Founders Day

Stay dry at UMass Amherst Founders Day!

Most of the day's events, including remarks by Governor Deval Patrick and performances by the UMass Amherst Minuteman Marching Band, have been moved inside, to the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. Lunch will be served, as previously announced, under tents on the Fine Arts Center Plaza.

145 years ago, on April 29, 1863, John A. Andrew, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, signed Senate Bill No. 156, establishing what would later become the University of Massachusetts.

This April 29th, the University will celebrate its founding in service to the Commonwealth with a celebration of music and dance from our campus and our communities followed by a festive outdoor barbeque luncheon.

The morning’s performance of music and dance, to take place in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, will feature outstanding talent from a variety of traditions in a fast-moving tribute to the original founders whose vision and foresight we benefit from today.

The commemoration will continue during lunchtime festivities with birthday remarks from His Excellency, Governor Deval Patrick, and from Jack Wilson, president of the University of Massachusetts. The nationally renowned UMass Amherst Minuteman Marching Band will entertain as our distinguished guests cut the ceremonial birthday cake in honor of our founders.

Please join us for the music and dance performance by requesting free tickets in advance (tickets also available at the door while they last). All are welcome to attend.
