Paul earned a B.A. from Hamilton College where he majored in Cultural Anthropology.  Looking to blend his social science background into a career working with private forest landowners, he went on to complete an M.S. degree in Sustainable Systems, with a concentration in Resources Management, from Slippery Rock University.  He then earned a second M.S. degree in Forest Resources, with a specialization in silviculture, from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Before coming to UMass, Paul worked for seven years with the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation as a Service Forester in the Westfield and Farmington watersheds.  In this capacity, he implemented the state’s forest cutting practices act (Ch. 132) as well as the state’s current use tax program (Ch. 61).  In addition to these regulatory duties, Paul performed outreach and gave technical assistance to landowners, resource professionals, conservation organizations and municipal officials.

Paul has been active both regionally and nationally in the forest landowner cooperative movement.  He was one of the innovators of the Massachusetts Woodlands Cooperative (MWC) (http://www.masswoodlands.coop).  Paul was also instrumental in developing a new model of group green certification for MWC, helping make Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification accessible to small, private landowners.

In the newly created Forestry Extension Specialist position, Paul will provide outreach to forest landowners, continuing education for MA licensed foresters and timber harvesters, and technical assistance to conservation organizations, community leaders and policy makers.  In addition, he will help conduct applied research with the department faculty.
