Development
The Department of Food Science is blessed with having wonderful
alumni and friends of the Department.
As a result we have been extremely successful in establishing endowments
and receiving support from alumni and friends of the Department
since we began to solicit such support in 1990. Since that time we
have
been most fortunate in receiving outstanding support for day-to-day
operations of the Department as well as creating the following
endowments:
The Carl Fellers Memorial Fund $1,000,000
F. J. Francis Endowed Chair $1,500,000
F. M. Clydesdale Professorship $600,000
Charm Science Scholarship $50,000
In addition we have just initiated a campaign to raise $1,000,000
for Graduate Student Scholarships.
As we all know the strength of a Department is dependent upon
the excellence of its students and the research they perform.
We are finding that to attract
the best and the brightest we are going to require a source of available
funds so that we can compete nationally in a timely manner.
We have been most successful
thus far with one of our current students receiving a Fullbright to England
(one of 10 out of 690 nominations nationally), but I am afraid we will
be less able
to compete without an endowment and continuing source of funds.
We hope to create four scholarships in the amount of $250,000 each.
This will spin off $10,000 per year, which will be matched by $10,000
from
a faculty grant and further matched by a $10,000 waiver of tuition.
This means that
a
$250,000
gift will produce a graduate stipend of $30,000 - an impossible feat
at
most universities. Naming opportunities exist for a donation of $250,000
which
would establish, in perpetuity, a named scholarship for graduate students.
Of course
any contribution would be wonderful to help us on our way.
We are also
looking to creating an Endowed Chair in Food Science Policy. We
propose to endow a Chair for $2.0 million with a one-time gift of
$1 million to be matched
by the University with $1 million. The Chair would be held by a Professor
of
Food Science who would serve as the Academic Director of our new
initiative
in Food Science Policy.
