How to Register for the Five College Mentored Language Program
Deadlines
- April 7: Review of applications begins
- April 18: Application deadline for students who will need a placement assessment
- April 7-September 5: Applications will continue to be reviewed as long as space is available.
- NOON on Friday, September 5th: FINAL APPLICATION DEADLINE
- Returning students need to make an appointment to do registration paperwork in the FCCSWL office. Returning students do not need to submit a new application or attend an information session. Non-UMass returning students must also complete an online Five College enrollment request through their home campus course registration system and submit the signed instructor permission form to the home campus registrar/central records. Students will be provided with the instructor permission signature at the paperwork appointment. Continuing students returning from study abroad or intensive language courses need to contact the Center about placement arrangements prior to the April 18th placement request deadline.
Application Instructions for Students New to the Program
- Read the course information and schedules for the language in which you are interested:
Arabic (Modern Standard and Colloquial),
Hindi,
Persian,
Swahili,
Turkish,
Uzbek.
- Submit the online Mentored Language Program Application.
- Students with previous experience in the language will require a placement interview. The need for a placement will be determined after reviewing the submitted application. Students needing placements will be contacted to make appropriate arrangements. The application deadline for students who may need placements is April 18th, 2008.
- Arabic dialect / colloquial Arabic courses require only the application and a paperwork appointment (see below). Applicants for these courses do not need to attend an information session.
- Attend one of the required information sessions.

- Reserved Information Sessions: Students who submit an application may be eligible to attend a different information session. You will be informed of your options after we review your application.
- Make a paperwork appointment with the FCCSWL office after the application has been approved and you have attended a required information session. Applicants will be e-mailed about the status of the application. In some cases, students may be able to complete the paperwork immediately following an information session.
- Five College Interchange Registration: Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke and Smith College students must also complete an online Five College enrollment request through their home campus course registration system and submit the signed instructor permission form to the home campus registrar/central records. The instructor permission signature will be provided at the paperwork appointment.
- UMass students: FCCSWL staff will enter the registration into SPIRE.
- The registration deadline for the Mentored Language Program is NOON on Friday, September 5th. Apply early, some sections will fill up before this date.

Bartlett Hall is very close to the Haigis Mall bus stop. When you get off the bus, look to your left and you will see Herter Hall. Bartlett Hall is behind Herter Hall.
