CULTURAL TOURISM

According to the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism, visitors to our region spend more time engaged in cultural activities than any other activity (including visits to cultural events, festivals, historic places and museums). The Alliance sees cultural tourism as a vital contributor to our region’s economy, and we continue to collaborate with representatives of the state and region’s tourism bureaus, hospitality industry, ecotourism groups, cultural organizations, artists and others to bring more attention to role of arts and culture in bringing tourists to the region.

Below are listings of our current and past programs, as well as other resources on cultural tourism.

The Western Massachusetts Arts Alliance invited cultural organizations, artists, tourism and hospitality representatives, and economic development officials from across the region to a daylong summit on cultural tourism. Sessions focused on how the cultural community participates in tourism activity and how the visitor industry supports these efforts. The purpose of the summit was to explore interest in and opportunities for expanding participation in cultural tourism in western Massachusetts, especially among small and mid-size cultural organizations and artists.
Building Arts Partnerships
On November 1, 2000, the University reconvened key administrators from the University and from cultural and educational institutions in the western Massachusetts community to begin to address the needs articulated in the earlier Forum for Partnerships in the Arts.
The Connecticut River Valley Cultural Corridor Map
The Western Massachusetts Arts Alliance collaborated in the production of a map of cultural attractions along the I91 corridor between Hartford, Connecticut and the three counties of Western Massachusetts (Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties). The project brought together a broad coalition of representatives from cultural organizations, economic development and tourism agencies and area businesses to promote cultural tourism. The map lists nearly 250 cultural attractions in our region, offering just a sampling of the rich resources that visitors and residents alike can enjoy. Over 20,000 copies of the brochure were made available at area visitors bureaus, cultural attractions and to every incoming student in the region.
