Teachers, school administrators, teaching artists and cultural organizations all work to support lively arts instruction in our schools. The Western Massachusetts Arts Alliance sponsors networking events and professional development programs to help arts educators to share information and form new educational partnerships. Here's a sampling of our current and past programs, as well as other resources for arts educators.

Hidden Tech Matchmaking Session
    WMAA Steering Committee Member, Christine Texiera, will be presenting on a panel discussion at this program designed to reach small business owners who are interested in working with non-profits (in a volunteer or reduced fee capacity) on computer projects. Representatives of non-profit arts and cultural organizations are encouraged to attend!

Emerging Leaders Meeting
    Steering Committee Member Maren Brown made a presentation on the history and programs of the Western MA Arts Alliance to this meeting of Emerging Leaders in the Arts.
Reinforcing Critical Links Planning Summit
    The forum featured discussion of practical strategies for using the research and of implications for: Advocacy, Research, Teacher preparation, Assessment, Curriculum development, Transfer of Learning.
Forum for Funding in the Arts
    This event introduced participants to funding options for regional art programs and initiatives. The event included a panel discussion featuring representatives from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities and the Massachusetts Service Alliance.
Convergence: Building Partnerships in Western Mass. Public Schools conference
    Panel discussion on arts partnerships in the schools. Representing the Western Massachusetts Arts Alliance were Priscilla Kane Hellweg and Michael Kusek.
Learning Partnerships in the Arts
    At this event, participants were updated on the activities of the working groups met since the last forum in November, after which Dr. Craig Dreeszen, Director of the Arts Extension Service at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, presented a structured workshop on his nationally-acclaimed "Learning Partnerships" program.
Art Curriculum Frameworks Training
    A training on the standardized art curriculum in the Massachusetts public schools offered by the Massachusetts Department of Education's Art Specialist, Barbara Haber. If you wish to learn more about the art curriculum standards, visit the Massachusetts Department of Education's web site.
Building Arts Partnerships
    On November 1, 2000, the University reconvened key administrators from the University and from cultural and educational institutions in the western Massachusetts community to begin to address the needs articulated in the earlier Forum for Partnerships in the Arts.
Forum for Partnerships in the Arts
    On May 24, 2000, the University invited key administrators from the University and from cultural and educational institutions in the western Massachusetts community to explore the topic of partnerships in the arts. The Forum had two primary goals: (1) to assess the needs of community partners in building partnerships with the University and (2) to faciliate networking between campus organizations and community partners.

    One of the most comprehensive surveys of research in arts education. Scroll down the list of publications by the Council to find the Arts Education Research Compendium.
Department of Education’s Arts Education in Public Elementary Schools

    Here you will find information about the standardized curricula in the state of Massachusetts collectively known as the "Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks." Art is one of the seven curriculum frameworks that you can download at this site.

Project Zero
    Harvard University’s Project Zero is one of the most respected arts education research institutions in the country.
WGBY Education Services Web Site
    Springfield’s public television station has produced a wonderful resource for teachers and educators.
Kennedy Center Arts Edge
    The Kennedy Center’s arts edge web site offers a plethora of information for arts educators, including a downloadable version of the National Standards for Arts Education.

    Massachusetts Cultural Council provides grants, and technical assistance. Local Cultural Councils in each Massachusetts community also award grants to artists, schools, and community organizations on behalf of the state agency.
