Title: How Private Faith Functions in the Public

Location: New York, NY

My work is about how private faith functions in the public. I'm exploring what it means to carry a belief outside of yourself. How do things like prayer, worship, service, etc. operate in arenas where people believe different things? I try to navigate between propaganda and censorship. The images I've included are a variety of projects in which I've attempted to explore these questions- warning signs for spirituality, portable church furniture, public prayer booths, reflective safety choir robes, etc. I try to balance sarcasm and sincerity, humor and seriousness in a way that allows people to confront spiritual issues that are often avoided, abstracted, or treated cynically.

Dylan Mortimer graduated with a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2002, and with an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His exhibition list includes Longwood Arts Center in the Bronx, David Zwirner Gallery, Dumbo Arts Center, Boots Centemporary Art Space in St. Louis, The Kansas City Jewish Museum, and Columbia University. he has installed public art in New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Lawrence, KS.
