Title: Dulce Sueño regresa a su plaza de Guayama, Puerto Rico
Location: Guayama, Puerto Rico
To understand this mural, Dulce Sueño regresa a su plaza de Guayama, Puerto Rico, it is necessary to take a look at its Architectural and Resonance (sound) legacy. At the turn of the century, Puerto Rico was on the stopping points of the West Indies African Slave Trade Routes of the Caribbean; and Guayama (founded in 1763) having one of the largest ports of the Caribbean facilitated the settlement of new people coming from all over the world. The architecture surrounding this mural includes; a Neo-Roman Cathedral built in 1827-1867; a French (Corsica people) water-fountain, a Neo-Classical/Creole Style (Spaniard/Portuguese) Museum; a German Bronze and Gold Church Bells (1835); Swiss Church Clock (18??); Art Deco Theater (1938); and 600 A.D., our pre-Colombian Taíno nation. The intricate lines, swirls, and colors represent the chu-cu-chucu-chucu-cha of the voices of the Taíno people, the pucutu-pucuta of our African legacy, the ocean-side that cradles us with its susurro; and the feminine ancestral voice reveled by the embodiment of Dulce Sueño/Sweet Dream in a post-colonial era revealed through the language of this universal/abstract piece of art.
