The University Museum of Contemporary Art opens its 25th anniversary season with a sound installation and two-week residency by Rolf Julius. Based in Berlin, Julius creates sound installations by combining ambient sound with electronics. His influences range from the minimalist music of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich to the isolated sounds of crickets or the wind.

Music for a Garden is a permanent audio installation he created in 1996 at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh for a garden designed by artist Winifred Lutz. Three pairs of speakers were mounted high and low on the Factory's exterior walls and aimed in different directions, creating an architectural sound space. From each set of speakers came a distinct element of the music Julius composed for the space.

Julius also creates indoor works using simple shapes and ordinary sounds to create quietly powerful pieces with a Zen-like sensibility. For the University Museum of Contemporary Art , Julius will work with students to create a site-specific sound installation.

The exhibition will open with a public reception on Friday, September 15 from 5 to 7pm, and continues through December 15. The exhibition is supported in part with funds from the Frederick C. Tillis Endowment for the Arts.
