Legendary Artists From Buena Vista Social Club Come To Fine Arts

Come January 3, Wim Wender's film the Buena Vista Social Club will come to life on the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall stage in an exclusive engagement featuring the legendary and charismatic stars of the film -- pianist Rubén González and vocalists Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo. A 14-piece orchestra comprised of some highly notable musicians will join them. This concert is one of only eight U.S. appearances this year and continues the Center Series 25th anniversary celebration.

In what has to be the comeback story of the century, these Cuban music stars emerged from a life of retirement and obscurity to light the world on fire with their contributions to the Buena Vista Social Club recordings. Since reuniting for a tour and starring in the documentary by Wim Wenders, González and Ferrer have toured the world playing to sold-out houses -- continuing to reaffirm their position as two of the most influential artists of the pre-Castro Cuba.

Omara Portuondo has long been Cuba's musical sweetheart and has been thrilling audiences with her passionate and moving voice. As the only female member of the Buena Vista Social Club, Omara Poruondo has transcended the landmark album and film with her breathtaking participation in both Ferrer's solo album and as part of the González/Ferrer world tour. She has brought audiences to their feet and tears to their eyes with romantic duets with Ibrahim Ferrer. Other U.S. stops on this tour include New York City, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, and Baltimore.

n Tickets for Buena Vista Social Club presents will surely go fast so get them while you can. Ticket prices are $55, $50, and $40 (special event, no discounts). For tickets and more information call the Box Office at 1-800-999-UMAS or 545-2511. This performance is sponsored by The River and WFCR 88.5FM, Public Radio for Western Massachusetts.
